Make air quality data (access) great again – restoring air quality data access to cities around the globe
Last month, the US state department shut down its nearly 20 year old air quality monitoring program. Up until the beginning of March 2025, 80 US embassies and consulates regularly published air quality data from around the world. For many of the affected countries, this data was the only or one of very few reliable sources of current air quality information.
Current air quality data is important, as it both helps communities to protect themselves during periods of high pollution – for instance by avoiding strenuous outdoor activities – and it also helps governments to take meaningful action and track their progress towards cleaner air.
This is why at Breeze Technologies, we are aiming to deploy air quality sensors in as many of the affected cities as possible. And we are looking for partners to support our work both with funding, as well as with locations to install the sensors at. Data will be shared both through a global community portal, and we will make raw sensor data available for download and integration into public data portals.
Our sensors measure all common air pollutants:
- Carbon monoxide (CO)
- Nitrogen monoxide and dioxide (NO, NO2)
- Particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10)
- Ozone (O3)
- Ammonia (NH3)
If you are interested in supporting our initiative with funding or other resources, please fill out this form: https://forms.gle/4gmNjtoWnpkp2pGb7
And if you live in one of the affected cities, and are willing to host a sensor, please fill this form: https://forms.gle/oQwvMPD41HVFifow7 Ideally we are looking for people that live as close as possible to the US embassies to make the newly collected data comparable to archived datasets. We will provide the sensors free of charge to the selected hosts.
