It is a common air pollutant recognized by many standard air quality guidelines, including the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/new-2021-who-air-quality-guideline-limits\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Read on to find out why.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is nitrogen dioxide?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2<\/sub>) is an important atmospheric trace gas that is soluble in water. It has a reddish-brown color and is a strong oxidant. NO<sub>2<\/sub> is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/major-air-pollutants-their-impact-and-sources\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">formed through<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the oxidation of nitric oxide (NO) in combustion processes such as diesel engines and coal, oil, gas, wood, and waste plants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO<sub>2<\/sub> has many roles in the atmosphere and also in health effects. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0017\/123083\/AQG2ndEd_7_1nitrogendioxide.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">few important roles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of NO<sub>2<\/sub> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO<sub>2<\/sub> could have a potential direct role in global climate change if its concentrations were to be high enough, as it is an absorber of visible radiation, thus creating <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/where-does-smog-get-its-colour-from\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">impaired atmospheric visibility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and heating up the atmosphere.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO<sub>2<\/sub> plays a critical role in determining <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/ozone-o3\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ozone (O<sub>3<\/sub>)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> concentrations in the troposphere (i.e. at ground level).\u00a0 Through light absorption, NO<sub>2<\/sub> is broken down through light absorption into O<sub>3<\/sub> during a process called photolysis. This formation of O<sub>3<\/sub> can occur in polluted and unpolluted atmospheres.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO<sub>2<\/sub> controls the build-up and fate of so-called \u201cradical species,\u201d as NO<sub>2<\/sub> itself is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/byjus.com\/chemistry\/free-radicals\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">free radical<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (also written as <sup>\u2022<\/sup><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO<sub>2<\/sub>). Free radicals are unstable atoms that have an unpaired electron and are dangerous when consumed in excess levels. Interaction between free radicals and oxidants can generate a phenomenon known as oxidative stress. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3614697\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxidative stress<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can damage the cells in our body and destroy other structures such as proteins, lipids, and deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA), thereby causing aging, illness and cell damage.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2><strong>What are sources of nitrogen dioxide?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emission of nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2<\/sub>) from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0017\/123083\/AQG2ndEd_7_1nitrogendioxide.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">natural sources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> comes from:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lightning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bacterial and volcanic action<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO<sub>2<\/sub> emissions from human activities include the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heating and power generation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motor vehicles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Explosives and welding<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO<sub>2<\/sub> indoor emissions from human activities comes from:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tobacco smoking<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use of gas-fired appliances<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oil stoves<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><strong>What is the health impact of nitrogen dioxide?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2<\/sub>) is linked to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.airnow.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2018-06\/no2.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> adverse effects on the respiratory system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ajmc.com\/view\/short-term-exposure-to-nitrogen-dioxide-may-increase-risk-of-death-from-respiratory-disease\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Short-term effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of NO<sub>2<\/sub> can contribute to the risk of cardiovascular and respiratory death. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/no2-pollution\/basic-information-about-no2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of NO<sub>2<\/sub> may lead to the development of asthma, increase the risk of respiratory infections and chronic lung disease. These respiratory symptoms include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty in breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce ability to smell<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both pedestrians and drivers who spend time on major roads or traffic lanes can experience NO<sub>2<\/sub> exposure considerably higher than less busy streets. NO<sub>2<\/sub> also affects sensitive groups such as people with lung disease, children, and older adults.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What is the environmental impact of nitrogen dioxide?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrogen dioxide can fade and discolor furnishings and fabrics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/what-the-color-of-your-smog-tells-you-about-local-air-pollutants\/\">reduce visibility<\/a>, and react with surfaces. NO<sub>2<\/sub> also forms secondary particles called nitrates that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/no2-pollution\/basic-information-about-no2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cause haze and reduce visibility<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In heavy traffic there are higher NO<sub>2<\/sub> levels compared to residential areas or roads that are less traveled.
