Read on to find out why.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is nitrogen monoxide?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrogen monoxide (also called nitric oxide) is a chemical compound with the chemical formula NO that appears as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Nitric-oxide#:~:text=Nitric%20oxide%20or%20Nitrogen%20monoxide,automobile%20engines%20and%20power%20plants.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colorless gas with a sharp, sweet odor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Although known as a toxic air pollutant, NO also has many important functions in the human body. It is used as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/faculty.washington.edu\/chudler\/no.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a signal in the cardiovascular system and the nervous system<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, playing an important role in blood pressure regulation. NO can also be produced in large amounts by white blood cells. NO is an extremely important intermediate (i.e. a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Reaction_intermediate#:~:text=A%20reaction%20intermediate%20or%20an,one%20elementary%20step%20to%20complete.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">molecule<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that is created during, but immediately reacts further into the directly observed products of a chemical reaction) in the chemical industry. It is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/compound\/Nitric-oxide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic air pollutant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> produced by automobile engines and power plants.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The following distinctions are made for the different compounds in the Nitrogen oxide family:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/nitrogen-monoxide-no\/\">Nitrogen monoxide<\/a> (NO): a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/major-air-pollutants-their-impact-and-sources\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">colourless, toxic gas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from combustion processes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrogen dioxide (NO<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): formed through oxidation of NO from combustion processes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrogen oxides (NO<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">x<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">): a\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/no2-pollution\/basic-information-about-no2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">group of highly reactive gases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that includes NO, NO<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and nitric acid<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><b>What are the sources of nitrogen monoxide?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitrogen monoxide is produced naturally by lightning and also to a small extent by microbial processes in the soil. The main sources of NO are<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apis.ac.uk\/overview\/pollutants\/overview_nox.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> combustion processes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, partially from nitrogen compounds in fuel and from the direct combination of atmospheric oxygen and nitrogen in flames. While it is also produced in the human body, humans do not emit nitrogen monoxide.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main man-made emission sources of NO include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Power stations<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industrial and domestic combustion processes\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motor vehicles and road transport\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intechopen.com\/chapters\/17375\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">primary indoor sources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of nitrogen monoxide are unvented fuel burning appliances such as gas ranges (mostly during cooking) and kerosene space heaters. Heating appliances and tobacco smoking are also indoor sources that have an effect on overall indoor air quality.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the health impact of nitrogen monoxide?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breathing high concentrations of NO can make <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kansashealthsystem.com\/-\/media\/Files\/PDF\/More-Poisons\/Nitric-Oxide.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respiratory diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as asthma much more serious and even lead to respiratory infections. People with asthma, children, and the elderly are at a greater risk of the health effects caused by NO.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respiratory symptoms of exposure to nitrogen monoxide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/no2-pollution\/basic-information-about-no2#Effects\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coughing\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wheezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Difficulty in breathing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Development of asthma\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, NO can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ahajournals.org\/doi\/10.1161\/CIRCRESAHA.120.316748\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase blood pressure<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> leading to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aboutlawsuits.com\/child-smog-hypertension-183673\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypertension <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in some cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>What is the environmental impact of nitrogen monoxide?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nitric oxide interacts with water, oxygen, and other chemicals in the atmosphere to form acid rain. The damage caused by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.canada.ca\/en\/environment-climate-change\/services\/air-pollution\/pollutants\/common-contaminants\/nitrogen-oxides.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acid rain<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> affects the following:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegetation<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Buildings and materials<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acidification of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respiratory effect on humans and animals<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO also affects the air by making it hazy, a clear indication of air pollution. It creates the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/de\/blog\/where-does-smog-get-its-colour-from\/\">reddish-brown haze that people associate with smog<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
