It is produced by the incomplete combustion of carbonaceous fuels like wood, <\/span>petrol, coal, natural gas, and kerosene.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are sources of carbon monoxide?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outdoor sources of carbon monoxide include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vehicle and combustion engines (diesel and petrol)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Power plants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Biomass burning<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Forest fires<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volcanos<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">BBQs<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK138710\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indoor sources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of carbon monoxide include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incense<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boilers<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fireplaces<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kerosene, propane, and gas heaters<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ovens<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooktops<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cooker hoods<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Central vacuum systems<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tobacco smoke<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Man-made emissions are responsible for approximately two thirds of the carbon monoxide in the atmosphere today; natural emissions account for the other third.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the health impact of carbon monoxide?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon entering the bloodstream, carbon monoxide <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/books\/NBK138710\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">inhibits the body\u2019s ability to carry oxygen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to organs and tissues. Heamoglobin is usually responsible for binding to oxygen molecules and carrying them through the human body. However, the bond carbon monoxide forms with haemoglobin is 245 times stronger than the bond usually formed by oxygen. Carbon monoxide therefore stays much longer bound to the heamoglobin, blocking the limited amount of possible &#8222;docking sites&#8220; for oxygen, leading to an undersupply of the body with oxygen. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As such, extremely high concentrations can cause death. Infants, the elderly, and those with heart and respiratory diseases are particularly susceptible to carbon monoxide poisoning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/indoor-air-quality-iaq\/carbon-monoxides-impact-indoor-air-quality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Symptoms of carbon monoxide poisoning<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at low concentrations include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue in healthy individuals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain in individuals with heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At moderate concentrations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Angina<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impaired vision<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduced brain function<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At higher concentrations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Impaired vision and coordination<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headaches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dizziness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weakness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tiredness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flu-like symptoms<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confusion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Weak pulse<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fainting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Coma<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on the degree and duration of exposure, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/carbon-monoxide\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20370642\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complications of CO<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart damage and life-threatening cardiac complications<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Permanent brain damage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miscarriage<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fetal death<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Death<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CO exposure has also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/publications\/i\/item\/9789240034228\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been linked to ischemic heart disease (IHD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and its related symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the environmental impact of carbon monoxide?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon monoxide affects the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.npi.gov.au\/resource\/carbon-monoxide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">amount of greenhouse gases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when it is emitted into the atmosphere. This change in atmosphere is linked to climate change and global warming, as land and sea temperature increases changing to ecosystems, increasing storm activity, and causing other extreme weather events.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On a global scale , CO does not have a significant environmental effect. However, near the site of emission, CO can also react with other air pollutants. It can either form harmful ground level ozone during the summer months, or it can oxidize to form <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scied.ucar.edu\/learning-zone\/how-climate-works\/carbon-dioxide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbon dioxide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (CO<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), an important greenhouse gas that helps trap heat in our atmosphere.
