Read on to find out more.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are lichens?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fmicb.2016.00180\/full\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lichens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are organisms consisting of a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/symbiosis\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">symbiotic relationship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> between a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/fungus\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fungus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and a chlorophyll-containing partner, either <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/algae\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">algae<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/blue-green-algae\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cyanobacteria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Fungi are incapable of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.khanacademy.org\/science\/biology\/photosynthesis-in-plants\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photosynthesis<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as they do not possess <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/chlorophyll\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">chlorophyll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but algae and cyanobacteria do. By forming a symbiotic relationship, the fungus gains constant access to nourishment, and can thus thrive. Lichens are found <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/treesearch\/pubs\/37404\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in both nature and in human-made environments<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including rocks, trees, barren earth, metal and concrete. They are sensitive to air pollution because they receive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/lichens-as-bioindicators.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all nutrients from the atmosphere<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which makes them valuable as indicator species. In particular, the two pollutants that mostly affect lichens are nitrogen (N) and sulfur dioxide (SO<sub>2<\/sub>).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does nitrogen affect lichens?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lichens<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.fed.us\/wildflowers\/beauty\/lichens\/habitat.shtml\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> need nitrogen to survive<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as it supports them to produce necessary proteins and organic acids. Additionally, cyanobacteria engage in what is called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/nitrogen-fixation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nitrogen fixation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where the element is converted to ammonia, a more stable and easier-to-use form. The nitrogen used by lichens can be gaseous (N<sub>2<\/sub>), or come in the form of nitric oxide (NO) or nitrogen dioxide (NO<sub>2<\/sub>). Certain lichen species are sensitive to ammonia, while others are not. Too much nitrogen can in fact <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fs.usda.gov\/treesearch\/pubs\/37404\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">over-fertilize<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> certain lichen species and cause them to die. Excess nitrogen can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/lichens-as-bioindicators.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kill the chlorophyll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the alga, which deprives the fungi of the necessary sugars for survival.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does sulfur dioxide affect lichens?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lichens are sensitive to sulfur dioxide. The compound easily <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.anbg.gov.au\/lichen\/ecology-polution.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dissolves in water<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which the organism can then absorb, and is prevalent in the air in its gaseous state as well. Sulfur dioxide interferes with the cyanobacteria\u2019s ability to fix nitrogen, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.air-quality.org.uk\/19.php\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">destroys the chlorophyll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the alga, thus inhibiting photosynthesis. The compound also impedes lichen reproduction and spore germination across certain species.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How are lichens used to indicate air quality?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the United States, the health of various lichen species are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/articles\/lichens-as-bioindicators.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monitored and paired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with atmospheric deposition data to identify critical sources and overall levels of air pollution. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/our-mandate\/focus-areas\/environment\/atmospheric-deposition\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atmospheric deposition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the process of gases and particles from the atmosphere being transferred to earth. In this case, scientists are looking at nitrogen deposition levels to protect sensitive ecological systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lichens have also been used in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dortmund.de\/de\/leben_in_dortmund\/umwelt\/umweltamt\/immissionsschutz\/luft_luftreinhaltung\/luftqualitaet\/index~1.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Germany<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a bioindicator for air pollution, as they are sensitive to a number of air pollutants. Specifically, lichens are the most sensitive to sulfur dioxide, but other acidic pollutant gases as well as heavy metals and photo oxidants. In Germany, two methods existed that used lichens as indicators: exposure of lichens and recording of lichen growth on trees under natural conditions. The recording of the trees follows a certain standard:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must have a minimum circumference of 60 cm<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must be self-supporting<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Must not be shaded or only slightly shaded\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is also important to note that different lichen species have different sensitivities to air pollutants. Thus the variety in lichen species are taken into account when calculated and represented to the air quality index. This is done by determining the degree of cover and vitality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apis.ac.uk\/node\/1203\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Dutch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> developed a method of classifying lichens: \u201cnitrophyte\u201d lichen species thrive in high-nitrogen environments and on tree bark with high pH, while \u201cacidophyte\u201d lichen species prefer the opposite. Bark pH has been found to be affected by sulfur dioxide concentrations. This method has been used to map and monitor nitrogen and ammonia pollution patterns <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apis.ac.uk\/node\/1206\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1186\/2190-4715-24-19\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Europe, and has also helped discover that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/research.wur.nl\/en\/publications\/long-tern-monitoring-in-the-netherlands-suggests-that-lichens-res\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lichens respond to global warming<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Dutch method should not be mixed up with the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.apis.ac.uk\/node\/1198\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ellenberg method<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which uses &#8222;Ellenberg N Values&#8220; that estimate the position along a productivity\/macro-nutrient availability gradient at which a species reaches peak abundance. The method consists of an &#8222;Ellenberg N Index&#8220; determined by allocating an N score to each plant species, so that the overall mean score for the community is on a scale of nutrient poor to nutrient rich, rated 1 to 10 respectively. This method is also suitable to indicate environmental impacts, as it has been used to indicate species change and colonization across time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lichens are also being used to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhm.ac.uk\/discover\/nature-and-pollution-what-lichens-tell-us-about-toxic-air.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">monitor nitrogen levels at tea farms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Sri Lanka and the Himalayan forests. The growers use fertilizer that contains nitrogen in the form of ammonia, and as such are conducting research to see how the element would affect the ecology of the area.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s the best way to measure air quality?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is no doubt that lichens are certainly a useful indicator species, the information they provide is limited \u2014 they can only be used to monitor nitrogen and sulfur dioxide levels when in fact there are many more pollutants that serve as ecological and health threats. Moreover, indicator species are unable to give you immediate feedback of exact pollution levels, only averages over a longer period of time &#8211; similar to data you would be getting from a long-term passive collector. This makes sourcing, control, management, and improvement of air quality difficult. It is far more useful to have real-time data available in order to monitor the direct impact of changing pollution sources, such as traffic throughout a day.
