Read on to find out why. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is ozone?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccacoalition.org\/en\/slcps\/tropospheric-ozone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozone (O<sub>3<\/sub>)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a gas that exists in two levels of the atmosphere: the stratosphere (upper level) and the troposphere (ground level). In the stratosphere, ozone is naturally-occuring and considered good as it protects the Earth by filtering out UV radiation from the sun. On the other hand, ground-level ozone, also called tropospheric ozone, is a greenhouse gas, an air pollutant, and a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0018\/123084\/AQG2ndEd_7_2ozone.PDF\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major component of smog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It is a pale blue gas with a pungent smell, and is formed through the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/photochemical-reaction\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photochemical reactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of other pollutants. Tropospheric ozone is a short-lived climate pollutant with an atmospheric lifetime of a few hours to a few weeks.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are sources of ozone?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because ground-level ozone is a secondary pollutant, it doesn\u2019t have any direct emissions sources. Instead, existing air pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH<sub>4<\/sub>), nitrogen oxides (NO<sub>x<\/sub>), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) undergo photochemical reactions from strong sunlight and UV radiation to form tropospheric ozone. This is why O<sub>3<\/sub> levels <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/air-pollution-trends-across-the-seasons\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">typically peak in the summer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to the heat and sunlight.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These pollutants are created by human activities including:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vehicles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fossil fuel power plants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oil and chemical refineries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The agricultural sector<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indoor sources stem from electric motors in household appliances like copiers and laser printers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the health impact of ozone?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozone is suspected to have carcinogenic effects. It<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/indicators\/exceedances-of-air-quality-objectives\/health-aspects-of-air-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leads to reduced lung function and respiratory diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with exposure linked to premature mortality. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Long-term O<sub>3<\/sub> exposure is responsible for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ccacoalition.org\/en\/slcps\/tropospheric-ozone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 million premature deaths a year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to respiratory complications. Chronic effects of ozone<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/indicators\/exceedances-of-air-quality-objectives\/health-aspects-of-air-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">include<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Decreased lung function<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aggravated lung diseases (asthma, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD))<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lung cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is the environmental impact of ozone?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ozone is a strong greenhouse gas because of its ability to absorb radiation. Ground-level ozone not only increases climate warming, but also impacts evaporation rates, cloud formation, precipitation levels, and atmospheric circulation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O<sub>3<\/sub> is toxic to many plants and thus <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/air\/nature-ozone.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">damages vegetation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It contributes to forest decline and up to a 15% annual yield loss of soy, maize, rice, and wheat. Estimated <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ccacoalition.org\/en\/slcps\/tropospheric-ozone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global crop production losses due to ozone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> total 79-121 million tonnes, which is worth USD 11-18 billion annually. Tropospheric ozone also<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/00966665.1958.10467845\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accelerates the deterioration<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of rubbers, dyes, paints, coatings, and various textiles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can ozone emissions be lessened?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As ground-level ozone is a secondary pollutant, the best way to lower its levels is to reduce the emissions of its precursor pollutants. The U.S.\u2019s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www3.epa.gov\/region1\/airquality\/strategy.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommends implementing strategies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having vapour recovery nozzles at gas pumps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using cleaner burning gasoline formulated to reduce other pollutants<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Setting strict NO<sub>x<\/sub> emission limits for industrial combustion sources<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Providing enhanced vehicle inspection programs<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enforcing strict limitations on solvent usage in factories<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These measures, however, are only effective with proper monitoring.
