Exposure to air pollution thus comes at a cost, as it affects not only our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/health-impact-of-indoor-and-outdoor-air-pollution\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/link-between-air-pollution-and-climate-change\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">climate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/direct-economic-impact-of-improving-air-quality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">economy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as well. But what are the exact values? Let\u2019s find out.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air pollution costs the world 9,259.26 USD per second<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greenpeace Southeast Asia and the Centre for Research on Energy and Clean Air <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energyandcleanair.org\/publications\/costs-of-air-pollution-from-fossil-fuels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">released a report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on the economic and health costs of air pollution from burning fossil fuels. They concluded that the total cost of air pollution totalled US $2.9 trillion in 2018, which accounted for 3.3% of global GDP. Broken down, air pollution cost $8 billion per day. This was linked to 4.5 million deaths, with each death associated with a loss of 19 years of life. This value is according to the individuals\u2019 willingness to pay to reduce their chances of dying, and is based on the full economic costs of premature mortality, which includes the loss from individual paychecks, consumption, leisure, good health, and simply being alive. In 2013, global welfare losses from PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> and O<sub>3<\/sub> exposure totalled $5.11 trillion USD. By region, this was:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">East Asia and Pacific: $2,306 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Europe and Central Asia: $1,245 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Latin America and the Carribean: 194 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Middle East and North Africa: $154 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">North America: $495 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Asia: $604 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sub-Saharan Africa: $114 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The health effects of exposure to air pollution have been widely studied, and are thus well-known. They include an increased risk of stroke, heart, disease, lung cancer, and chronic and acute respiratory diseases due to the carcinogenic and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/air-pollution-and-noncommunicable-diseases\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irritating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> properties of the components of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/health-impact-of-specific-air-pollutants\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">various pollutants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Productivity and cognitive functions are also affected, which in turn <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/direct-economic-impact-of-improving-air-quality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leads to loss of workforce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on top of the resulting healthcare costs. Therefore, in 2018,\u00a0 fossil fuel PM<sub>2.5<\/sub> pollution specifically <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/energyandcleanair.org\/publications\/costs-of-air-pollution-from-fossil-fuels\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was responsible for<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> 1.8 billion days of work absence, 4 million cases of child asthma, and 2 million premature births. When looking at resulting economic costs based on the impact of air pollution in 2018:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disability from chronic diseases: $200 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Asthma: $17 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adult deaths: $2,400 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sick leaves: $100 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Child deaths: $50 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Preterm births: $90 billion<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are indirect costs associated with air pollution as well. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/ozone-o3\/\">Ground-level ozone (O<sub>3<\/sub>)<\/a> <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2015-11-ground-level-ozone-maize-soybean-yields.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threat to stable crop quality and production<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, affecting soybean, wheat, rice, maize, and barley. The pollutant creates toxic byproducts when dissolved in water within the plant\u2019s leaves, thus causing damage. As such, O<sub>3<\/sub> is expected to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/five-reasons-you-should-care-about-air-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce stable crop yields by 26% in 2030<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which will impact global food security and nutrition.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Improving air pollution helps society<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/five-reasons-you-should-care-about-air-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oecd.org\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> predicted that should things remain unchanged, by 2016 the annual global welfare costs due to premature deaths from outdoor air pollution would total US $18-25 trillion, with the costs of illness at $2.2 trillion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Air pollution is not an impossible issue to solve, however. UN Environment\u2019s sixth Global Environment Outlook <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/five-reasons-you-should-care-about-air-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">predicts that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> achieving the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unfccc.int\/process-and-meetings\/the-paris-agreement\/the-paris-agreement\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paris Agreement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> targets for mitigating climate change will cost US $22 trillion. By successfully reducing air pollution, $54 trillion can be saved from the resulting health benefits. The numbers are clear: immediate action against air pollution leads to net savings of $32 trillion.
