This is also true the other way around: climate change worsens air quality.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>How warmer temperatures worsen air quality<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/ozone-o3\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ground-level ozone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (O<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) is a secondary gas that is formed through a combination of heat and sunlight with other air pollutants like carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/major-air-pollutants-their-impact-and-sources\/#nitric-oxide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nitrogen oxides<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (NO<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">x<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/major-air-pollutants-their-impact-and-sources\/#volatile-organic-compounds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">volatile organic compounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (VOCs). Thus, higher temperatures would naturally lead to an increase in ozone formation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is supported by a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/10.1029\/2008JD011690\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> modelling ozone trends in Europe. In it, researchers investigated the effects of climate change on emissions of isoprene, which is a VOC produced by trees, and dry deposition, which is the uptake of ozone by plants. The result? Climate change is expected to double isoprene emissions, with up to 30% of the future increase in ozone concentrations expected to result from this. Plant uptake is expected to decrease in drier, warmer temperatures and will contribute to 60% of the future change in ozone levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The frequency and severity of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/wildfires-and-air-pollution-how-air-quality-sensing-can-help-to-quench-wildfires\/\">wildfires<\/a> has increased in recent years due to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/news\/2912\/satellite-data-record-shows-climate-changes-impact-on-fires\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high temperatures and low humidity caused by climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The fires <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/resources\/meteoworld\/wildfires-and-smoke-pollution-%E2%80%93-warnings-and-advisory\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">produce pollutants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), nitrogen oxides (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">NO<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">x<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), methane (<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CH<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and particulate matter (PM). Emissions are only expected to get worse as the earth continues to warm<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies have found that Earth\u2019s boreal forests are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/110\/32\/13055\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burning at an unprecedented rate not seen in 10,000 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/news\/2912\/satellite-data-record-shows-climate-changes-impact-on-fires\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wildfire season has increased by 25.3%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across global vegetated areas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How to combat climate change and improve air quality<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global warming and increasing pollution emissions are a vicious feedback loop that we need to break as the human race.
