The four main types of noncommunicable diseases are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cardiovascular diseases (17.9 million deaths annually)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cancers (9.3 million deaths annually)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Respiratory diseases (4.1 million deaths annually)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diabetes (1.5 million deaths annually)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Noncommunicable diseases <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/noncommunicable-diseases#tab=tab_1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disproportionately affect populations in low- and middle-income countries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These regions account for more than \u00be of global NCD deaths at 31.4 million and 82% of 16 million premature NCD deaths. Risk factors for NCDs include unhealthy diets, smoking, alcohol abuse, physical inactivity, and air pollution.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What is the link between noncommunicable diseases and air pollution?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/air-pollution#tab=tab_1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">7 million annual deaths attributed to air pollution worldwide<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 5 million are caused by NCDs. And <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/en\/health-topics\/environment-and-health\/air-quality\/news\/news\/2019\/3\/noncommunicable-diseases-and-air-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to the World Health Organization (WHO)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, air pollution is the second leading cause of deaths from noncommunicable diseases after tobacco smoking. In 2012, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/en\/health-topics\/environment-and-health\/air-quality\/publications\/2019\/noncommunicable-diseases-and-air-pollution-2019\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.8 and 3.7 million NCD deaths<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> were a result of ambient and household air pollution respectively.
