Read on to find out more.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What is smog?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To start off, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/encyclopedia\/smog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is defined as widespread air pollution that reduces visibility. The term \u201csmog\u201d is a combination of two words: \u201csmoke\u201d and \u201cfog\u201d, which are meant to describe its appearance. Originally, what is now known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/smog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sulphurous smog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/air-pollution-history-great-smog-london\/\">common in industrial areas<\/a> as it came from the sulphur oxides released by burning fossil fuels such as coal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/smog\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">photochemical smog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/ozone-o3\/\">ground-level ozone<\/a> or summer smog, is much more common. It predominantly occurs in urban areas, as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/major-air-pollutants-their-impact-and-sources\/#nitrogen-oxides\">nitrogen oxides<\/a> necessary for its creation come from car exhaust. In the presence of sunlight and heat, nitrogen oxides and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/major-air-pollutants-their-impact-and-sources\/#volatile-organic-compounds\">volatile organic compounds<\/a> undergo what\u2019s called a photochemical reaction to form smog. Image: Unsplash.com \/ Nishaan Ahmed<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then there\u2019s winter smog, which is caused by temperature inversion due to the cold season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What is a temperature inversion?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Usually, the higher the altitude, the lower the temperature of the air. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/temperature-inversion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperature inversion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a meteorological phenomenon that develops when cool air is trapped at the ground under a layer of warm air.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/temperature-inversion\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four types of temperature inversions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>ground inversion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> occurs most often on clear nights, when the air close to the ground is cooled by radiation.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>turbulence inversion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is created when a layer of calm air lies above turbulent air. As the turbulent layer brings warm air down and cools its upper part through what\u2019s called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/vertical-mixing\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vertical mixing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the layer of calm air above eventually ends up being warmer, thus causing an inversion.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>subsidence inversion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> forms when a large layer of air sinks due to high pressure and heats up as a result.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><b>frontal inversion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> develops when a cold air mass undercuts a warm air mass and keeps it on top.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>How do temperature inversions exacerbate smog?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The warmer air in a temperature inversion acts as a lid, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/media\/infographics\/temperature-inversion-traps-pollution-at\/view\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trapping pollutants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> near the ground and making them unable to disperse until the weather changes. As a result, the compounds end up reacting with each other to form other pollutants such as ground-level ozone, thus posing a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/health-impact-of-specific-air-pollutants\/#ozone\">serious risk to human health<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Temperature inversions are more common during the winter in the northern hemisphere due to high pressure, clear skies, and long nights, which allow heat to dissipate easily from the ground.
