Hence, an upgrade to the more-efficient condensing boiler or the most-efficient heat pump may be recommended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition to the improvements suggested by auditors, here are some other ways you yourself can save electricity in your home:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>Add insulation to your walls.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They help save money on heating and cooling.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Install ceiling fans.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> They are a more energy-efficient alternative to air conditioners and help keep your home cool by circulating the air indoors.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Replace your incandescent light bulbs. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use energy- and cost-efficient alternatives<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as fluorescent and LED bulbs instead.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Skip your dryer. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanging your clothes out to dry naturally helps save energy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Automate your home and building operations<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy generation today <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/airpollution\/ambient\/interventions\/power-generation\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">predominantly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> stems from fossil fuel power plants, which release air pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), greenhouse gases (GHGs), nitrogen oxides (NO<sub>x<\/sub>), particulate matter (PM), sulphur dioxide (SO<sub>2<\/sub>), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). The rise of smart devices has made it easier than ever to automate systems in your home to save energy, reduce air pollution, and subsequently save on your electricity bill. Areas that can be controlled include lighting, climate, sensors, entertainment systems, and appliances that can be easily controlled via your smartphone. This applies to both your home and your office.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Invest in energy-efficient appliances<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Energy efficient appliances are a great way to save on your home bills and reduce household air pollution. Various governments have come up with their own energy efficiency rating systems to help buyers make informed purchasing decisions. The United States uses the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/about\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ENERGY STAR<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> symbol to identify energy-efficient products based on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Environmental Protection Agency\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> evaluations. The European Union provides <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/energy-climate-change-environment\/standards-tools-and-labels\/products-labelling-rules-and-requirements\/energy-label-and-ecodesign\/about_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">energy labels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with a rating scale of A to G (most efficient to least efficient). These have proven to be incredibly effective. In 2018, ENERGY STAR certified products <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.energystar.gov\/about\/origins_mission\/energy_star_numbers\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">helped<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> save consumers $20 billion and reduced greenhouse gas emissions by 150 million metric tons. The EU energy labels <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/info\/energy-climate-change-environment\/standards-tools-and-labels\/products-labelling-rules-and-requirements\/energy-label-and-ecodesign\/about_en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> save households <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u20ac285 a year and create \u20ac66 billion in additional revenue for EU companies.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, you should consider replacing your gas stove with an electric one. Not only is it more cost-efficient to do so, gas stoves are a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/energy-and-environment\/2020\/5\/7\/21247602\/gas-stove-cooking-indoor-air-pollution-health-risks\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">major source of household air pollution<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, producing pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), formaldehyde (CH<sub>2<\/sub>O or HCHO), nitrogen oxides (NO<sub>x<\/sub>), and particulate matter (PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Reduce waste<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reduce, reuse, recycle! Cutting down on disposable items and plastic use reduces the waste that would otherwise have been lying in landfills or incinerated. Landfills <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/lmop\/basic-information-about-landfill-gas\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are a source<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) and methane (CH<sub>4<\/sub>), while the burning of trash <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccacoalition.org\/en\/activity\/open-waste-burning-prevention\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">releases toxins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ccacoalition.org\/en\/slcps\/black-carbon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">black carbon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, dioxins, and furans into the atmosphere.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, letting organic waste compost underground in your garden will not only provide essential nutrients to the soil, but it will also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/sustainable-management-food\/reducing-impact-wasted-food-feeding-soil-and-composting#benefits\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce the methane (CH<sub>4<\/sub>) emissions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that would have otherwise been generated in a landfill.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Use rechargeable batteries<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Disposable batteries leach toxins such as cadmium, lead, and mercury into the environment. While most batteries can be recycled, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rrapier\/2020\/01\/19\/environmental-implications-of-lead-acid-and-lithium-ion-batteries\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">process<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> oftentimes can fail to meet emission controls and waste management standards.
