Read on to find out.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>What is a carbon dioxide equivalent (CO<sub>2<\/sub>-e)?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2011\/apr\/27\/co2e-global-warming-potential\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">carbon dioxide equivalent (CO<sub>2<\/sub>-e)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is the standard unit of measurement for carbon footprints. It includes the direct and indirect emissions from manufacturing, heating, electricity, and transportation that are associated with the entity being evaluated as well as the emissions of related <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/overview-greenhouse-gases#nitrous-oxide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greenhouse gases (GHGs)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. These include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/overview-greenhouse-gases#methane\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">methane (CH<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ccacoalition.org\/en\/slcps\/tropospheric-ozone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ozone (O<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/overview-greenhouse-gases#nitrous-oxide\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nitrous oxide (N<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/ghgemissions\/overview-greenhouse-gases#f-gases\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fluorinated gases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The greenhouse gases are expressed as the same amount of CO<sub>2<\/sub><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the equivalent climate warming impact. This is essentially the total warming impact of said GHG relative to CO<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over a typical period of a hundred years. GWPs vary across different time periods, however, as certain gases remain longer in the atmosphere than others. Hence, it is impossible for a carbon footprint to be entirely accurate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In particular, a lot of uncertainty still remains regarding the GWP for ozone (O<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) because its climate impact is subject to complex interactions. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ccacoalition.org\/en\/slcps\/tropospheric-ozone\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/sub><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a \u201csecondary pollutant\u201d because it is not emitted directly; rather, it is formed by the reaction of air pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), nit<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rogen oxides (NO<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">x<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the presence of heat and sunlight. These reactions, along with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">O<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s interaction with UV radiation and its low <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/climateleadership\/atmospheric-lifetime-and-global-warming-potential-defined\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">atmospheric lifetime<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, make it difficult to determine an accurate GWP. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is for certain, however, is the impact <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/link-between-air-pollution-and-climate-change\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">air pollution has on the climate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why is carbon accounting important?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the fact that emission impacts cannot be identified with pin-point accuracy, carbon accounting is essential when it comes to combating climate change.
