The World Health Organization (WHO) published the following <a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/data\/gho\/data\/themes\/topics\/indicator-groups\/indicator-group-details\/GHO\/ambient-air-pollution\">statistics<\/a>, whereby of the 4.2 million deaths from worldwide ambient (outdoor) air pollution:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29% are from lung cancer<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17% are from acute lower respiratory infection<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">24% are from stroke<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">25% are from ischaemic heart disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">43% are from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>The health impact of indoor air pollution<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indoor air pollution comes from both ambient and indoor sources. These include biological and chemical contaminants, building materials, and combustion byproducts from cooking and heating. In developing countries, the latter are especially harmful. The burning of wood, crop wastes, charcoal, coal, dung, and kerosene in open fires and inefficient stoves releases pollutants such as carbon monoxide (CO), methane (CH<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), particulate matter (PM), and volatile organic compounds (VOC).
