There is little research on the health effects of air pollution in short time frames. This is why air quality indexes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/what-is-an-air-quality-index-how-is-it-calculated\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are typically only provided<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for time periods of an hour or longer. This method is effective when it comes to measuring outdoor air quality. The story is different indoors, however &#8211; it is important to be notified as soon as possible when air quality deteriorates so that the users of the space can take direct and immediate action to remedy the situation. Concentrations of some air pollutants can be between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/report-environment\/indoor-air-quality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4215499\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> times higher indoors than outdoors.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To solve this issue, Breeze Technologies uses a real-time air quality index for indoor applications that looks at the average air quality from the last five minutes as if it had already been measured in the last full hour. We calculate our indoor air quality index (IAQI) based on several key indicators. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The overall air quality index for indoors is thus based on the worst air quality index rating among them. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a closer look at how this is done.\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Breeze Technologies&#8216; overall indoor air quality index (IAQI)<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our overall IAQI is determined according to the worst rating of the following three parameters: carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>), indoor climate (temperature and humidity), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). For example, if CO<sub>2<\/sub> and indoor climate levels were both rated as \u201cExcellent\u201d, but VOC levels were simply \u201cFine\u201d, then the overall IAQI rating would be \u201cFine\u201d. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>)<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2019\/jul\/08\/indoor-carbon-dioxide-levels-could-be-a-health-hazard-scientists-warn\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has found that indoor levels of carbon dioxide have a negative impact on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/why-indoor-air-quality-is-important-for-every-business\/\">cognitive performance<\/a> as well as human health. Aside from this, high temperatures and humidity have been found to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/indoor-air-quality-iaq\/protect-indoor-air-quality-your-home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase the concentrations of certain pollutants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In addition, regulating temperature and humidity levels minimize the risk of mould growth indoors, thus preventing illnesses like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/headaches-at-work-the-sick-building-syndrome-could-be-the-reason\/\">Sick Building Syndrome<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For our IAQI, the ratio of temperature and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/relative-humidity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relative humidity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is calculated and presented on a scale of 1-6 with a rating of Excellent to Severe. A rating higher than 3 requires action to be taken on either adjusting the temperature or the humidity of the building, so as to best minimize mould risk and air pollution while maximizing style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Volatile organic compounds<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> refer to a large group of carbon-containing substances including hydrocarbons, alcohols, aldehydes, and organic acids. They are particularly concentrated indoors due to internal sources from interior products and building materials such as furniture, plastics, carpets, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wallpapers, cleaning materials, copy machines, lacquers, solvents, synthetic fragrances, insecticides and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5501723\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thirdhand tobacco smoke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The indoor impact of VOCs has greater health implications since people spend time predominantly in buildings. This makes them an important air pollutant to monitor <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as they have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.umweltbundesamt.de\/en\/topics\/health\/environmental-impact-on-people\/chemical-substances\/volatile-organic-compounds-voc#what-health-impacts-can-vocs-have\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic, mutagenic, carcinogenic, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">genotoxic, and teratogenic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> effects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on humans.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Milder symptoms are characterized by headaches, fatigue, loss of productivity, and sleep disorders, which are categorized as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/headaches-at-work-the-sick-building-syndrome-could-be-the-reason\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSick Building Syndrome<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. The sum of all the VOC concentration types combined becomes the total volatile organic compounds (TVOCs) value.
