However, the environment can be just as responsible for releasing foreign substances into the atmosphere. In this article, we will focus on one natural source in particular: wildfires.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are wildfires?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/encyclopedia\/wildfires\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wildfire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is an uncontrolled fire that burns in a variety of ecosystems such as forests, grasslands, brushlands, and savannas. Fires can be started by human activity or by natural phenomena, such as lightning. The frequency and intensity of wildfires have increased in recent decades due to the dryness, drought, low humidity and rising temperatures <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/news\/2912\/satellite-data-record-shows-climate-changes-impact-on-fires\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brought forth by climate change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are no geographical limitations to wildfires; they exist on every continent and in all types of environments. Weather and topography play a role in their intensity, spread, and duration. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalgeographic.org\/encyclopedia\/wildfires\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildfires are essential to the environment<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, too: they benefit certain plant species and keep ecosystems healthy by assisting in propagation and by clearing underbrush for new growth. However, they can also be deadly when spread out of control by injuring individuals, damaging properties and resources, and disrupting communication, transportation, water supplies, power, and gas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intense wildfires are also capable of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.accuweather.com\/en\/weather-news\/how-destructive-wildfires-create-their-own-weather\/346337\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">creating their own local weather systems<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by generating extreme heat and energy, making them wildly unpredictable and incredibly dangerous. Thunderstorms can be formed through the rising of hot air, which cools and condenses on ash to create a cloud called a pyrocumulus. If the wildfire is large enough, it can even create a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/oh-good-now-theres-an-outbreak-of-wildfire-thunderclouds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pyrocumulonimubus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (pyroCb), a firestorm cloud, which can send down rain and lightning. While the rain may help with the fire, it typically isn\u2019t enough. Rather, the resulting lightning can spark new wildfires as the cloud advances across the landscape. Wildfires can also produce their own winds, whirls, and even tornadoes. This occurs when plumes of hot air rise rapidly, which create vacuums that pull surrounding air into the columns. Local topography and wind direction then determine the intensity and severity of the resulting winds. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What pollutants are released by wildfires? What are the health effects of wildfire smoke?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/resources\/meteoworld\/wildfires-and-smoke-pollution-%E2%80%93-warnings-and-advisory\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wildfires produce<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>), nitrogen oxides (NO<sub>x<\/sub>), methane (CH<sub>4<\/sub>), and particulate matter (PM) among other pollutants. These air pollutants <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/wildfires#tab=tab_2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irritate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the eyes, lungs, nose, and throat, exacerbate asthma and existing cardiovascular diseases, and cause <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/iaqscience.lbl.gov\/cc-wildfires\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">respiratory infections<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as colds, bronchitis, and pneumonia. Specifically, tiny PM particles can penetrate deep into the respiratory and circulatory systems, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/health-impact-of-specific-air-pollutants\/\">damaging the lungs, heart, and brain<\/a>. In fact, particulate matter from wildfires have been found to be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3221783\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">four times more deadly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than their normal atmospheric counterparts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In addition, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3492003\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wildfires produce carcinogens<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> such as aldehydes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/wildfires#tab=tab_2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mercury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a known poison, has also been found in wildfire smoke, which can cause muscle weakness, speech impairment, and vision problems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3346787\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">global estimate for premature deaths attributed to wildfires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is over 339,000 every year.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How can wildfires be detected?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/mission_pages\/fires\/main\/missions\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Satellites<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are often the first to detect wildfires in remote regions. Aside from tracking, they are also used for fire forecasting and risk assessment The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atmosphere.copernicus.eu\/global-fire-emissions\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Fire Assimilation System (GFAS)<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> uses information from satellite-based sensors to provide estimates of pollutant emissions, while the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/public.wmo.int\/en\/programmes\/global-atmosphere-watch-programme\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Atmosphere Watch Programme<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> studies the variability and trends in atmospheric composition for research, forecasts, and development of future warning systems. Unfortunately, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nasa.gov\/feature\/goddard\/2019\/nasa-tracks-wildfires-from-above-to-aid-firefighters-below\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">there are limitations to satellite imaging<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: It is difficult to precisely pinpoint fire location and size due to averaging the heat signatures detected over the satellite camera&#8217;s pixels, not to mention weather conditions such as cloud cover. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.enr.gov.nt.ca\/en\/services\/wildfire-operations\/detecting-wildfire\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other methods of reporting wildfires<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include public hotlines, lookout stations, and ground and aerial patrols. However, these are subject to human error and can be costly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Current studies have found that Earth\u2019s boreal forests are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/110\/32\/13055\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">burning at an unprecedented rate not seen in 10,000 years<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/climate.nasa.gov\/news\/2912\/satellite-data-record-shows-climate-changes-impact-on-fires\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wildfire season has increased by 25.3%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> across global vegetated areas. Hence, new and innovative monitoring solutions are now imperative. Expanding air quality networks in cities can make wildfire detection easier. Today, Breeze Technologies offers <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/air-quality-sensors\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sensors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that monitor all common air quality parameters. These can be used to identify patterns of emitted pollutants to accurately locate wildfires, thus allowing governments to take immediate and effective action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We are currently <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dhs.gov\/science-and-technology\/news\/2020\/02\/05\/news-release-dhs-st-evaluate-select-wildfire-sensor-technologies\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">extending the data analytics capabilities of our Environmental Intelligence Cloud<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to identify wildfire ignition location, track fire perimeters and characteristics, and provide geographical notifications and warnings in real-time. This effort is happening <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/breeze-technologies-selected-by-us-department-of-homeland-security-for-wildfire-sensing-initiative\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in collaboration with<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) Science and Technology Directorate\u2019s (S&amp;T) wildfire work track.
