Just because indoor air pollution can be harder to detect, however, doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s harmless: the concentrations of some pollutants can be between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/report-environment\/indoor-air-quality\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC4215499\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> times higher indoors than outdoors. Aside from the obvious health implications, there are cognitive ones as well. Here\u2019s why businesses should care about the quality of air at the workplace.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>W<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">e have updated this article on 27\/04\/2021 with new information on the topic.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>The impact of poor air quality in the workplace<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been many studies done on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/direct-economic-impact-of-improving-air-quality\/\">economic impact of air pollution<\/a>. In the workplace specifically, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/commissions\/pollution-and-health\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">800,000 people die every year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to poor air quality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apart from damaging respiratory and circulatory systems, air pollution has been found to have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unenvironment.org\/news-and-stories\/story\/air-pollution-linked-huge-reduction-intelligence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negative cognitive effects<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/agenda\/2018\/12\/increased-levels-of-carbon-dioxide-could-reduce-brainpower-study-finds\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on individuals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, from reduced memory, impaired concentration, and lower decision-making capabilities to decreased language and mathematical abilities. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/press-releases\/green-office-environments-linked-with-higher-cognitive-function-scores\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health\u2019s Centre for Health and the Global Environment, SUNY Upstate Medical University, and Syracuse University found that individuals who work in well-ventilated offices with below-average levels of air pollutants perform cognitively better than those who work in environments with average levels of indoor air pollution. The pollutants they first focused on were volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are typically found in higher concentrations indoors. These compounds are emitted from interior products and building materials such as furniture, plastics, wallpapers, cleaning materials, carpeting, copy machines, synthetic fragrances, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5501723\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thirdhand tobacco smoke<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the study, participants working in three different office conditions were compared:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Normal (conventional work environment with high VOC concentrations)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green (work environment with low VOC concentrations)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Green+ (work environment with enhanced ventilation and low VOC concentrations)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/press-releases\/green-office-environments-linked-with-higher-cognitive-function-scores\/\">Researchers found <\/a><\/span>that cognitive performance scores for those in green+ environments were 2x higher and those in green environments were 61% higher than those in normal environments. Across nine cognitive function domains, the largest improvements were found in the areas of:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crisis Response: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ability to plan and strategize under emergency conditions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (131% higher in green+, 97% higher in green)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy:\u00a0 the ability to use solutions through information and planning (288% higher in green+, 183% in green)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information Usage:<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the capacity to use provided and gathered information to attain goals (299% higher in green+ 172% higher in green)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers also examined the effect of carbon dioxide (CO<sub>2<\/sub>) on individuals. While <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/SB124001537515830975\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not considered a direct indoor pollutant<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, as it is an essential gas that naturally occurs in the atmosphere, its concentrations tend to be higher in indoor spaces due to lack of ventilation and thus contributes to cognitive performance. As a result, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hsph.harvard.edu\/news\/press-releases\/green-office-environments-linked-with-higher-cognitive-function-scores\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that out of the nine cognitive functions tested, the scores for seven of them decreased as CO<sub>2<\/sub> levels increased to levels commonly observed indoors. These were:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Basic Activity Level: the ability to make decisions at all times<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Applied Activity Level: the capacity to make decisions towards overall goals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Task Orientation: the capacity to make specific decisions towards task completion<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crisis Response: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ability to plan and strategize under emergency conditions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information Usage: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the capacity to use provided and gathered information to attain goals\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breadth of Approach: the capacity to use a variety of options and opportunities to make decisions and attain goals<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strategy: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the ability to use solutions through information and planning<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Why do I have headaches at work? The sick building syndrome<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from impacting productivity, poor indoor air quality has been linked to an illness called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/headaches-at-work-the-sick-building-syndrome-could-be-the-reason\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSick Building Syndrome\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While the specific causes are unknown, it is believed that poor ventilation and chemical contaminants such as volatile organic compounds are to blame. Exposure to these chemicals <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2796751\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">result in flu-like symptoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, suc<\/span>h as headaches, dry c<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ough, fever, chills, chest tightness, dry or itchy skin, dizziness, nausea, difficulty concentrating, fatigue, and sensitivity to odours.
