Read on to find out more. <\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h2>Spring<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/ammonia-nh3\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ammonia (NH<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/sub><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) concentrations <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/2017\/apr\/09\/spring-is-not-the-only-thing-in-the-air\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increase drastically in spring<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> due to agricultural activities. It is released from the fertilizer and manure that is spread on fields for planting, which then reacts with other existing compounds in the atmosphere to create secondary <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/major-air-pollutants-their-impact-and-sources\/#particulate-matter\">particulate matter<\/a> (PM<sub>2.5<\/sub>). In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/environment\/air\/pdf\/review\/Facts%20and%20figures%20agriculture%20under%20the%20NEC.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">up to 58%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of particulate matter in European cities is from ammonia used in farming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Summer<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/ozone-o3\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ground-level ozone (O<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3<\/span><\/sub><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) levels <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/highlights\/hot-summer-weather-exacerbating-ozone-pollution\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">periodically peak<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during the summer as it is formed through a combination of heat and sunlight reacting with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/major-air-pollutants-their-impact-and-sources\/#nitric-oxide\">nitrogen oxides<\/a> (NO<sub>x<\/sub>) and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/major-air-pollutants-their-impact-and-sources\/#volatile-organic-compounds\">volatile organic compounds<\/a> (VOCs). This is particularly concerning when it comes to ozone\u2019s effects on health, especially since more than 98% of the European Union (EU) population is exposed to ozone levels <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/phe\/health_topics\/outdoorair_aqg\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher than those recommended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the World Health Organization (WHO).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Autumn<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain volatile organic compounds <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.acom.ucar.edu\/ASR\/2001\/ASR_BAI.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">such as<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> methanol and acetaldehyde emit from deciduous trees due to falling and decaying leaves. Plants produce VOCs for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41598-017-10975-x\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">various purposes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including adapting to environmental stress, communicating to other plants, and defending against insects. VOCs pose a threat to human health through its ability to form ground-level ozone by reacting with nitrogen oxides in the presence of sunlight.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Winter<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/where-does-smog-get-its-colour-from\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Smog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a significant issue during winter due to what is known as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/what-is-temperature-inversion-and-how-does-it-exacerbate-smog\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">temperature inversion<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Under normal circumstances, air temperature decreases at higher altitudes. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/media\/infographics\/temperature-inversion-traps-pollution-at\/view\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However in winter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the atmospheric layer closest to the ground can be cooler than the air above it. High atmospheric pressure is caused by the presence of cold air. It allows solar radiation to reach the earth, thus warming it up. The accumulated heat is lost at night due to lack of cloud clover, causing it to rise and subsequently trap the now-cool air at the ground. As a result, pollutants such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/major-air-pollutants-their-impact-and-sources\/#carbon-monoxide\">carbon monoxide<\/a> (CO), nitrogen oxides, particulate matter, and volatile organic compounds are trapped at the ground level until the temperature changes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.breeze-technologies.de\/blog\/major-air-pollutants-their-impact-and-sources\/#nitrogen-dioxide\">Nitrogen dioxide<\/a> (NO<\/span><sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2<\/span><\/sub><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) concentrations were found to be <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.euro.who.int\/__data\/assets\/pdf_file\/0009\/128169\/e94535.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">higher indoors during the winter<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than in the summer.
